I used to get a tow behind from the co-op that held maybe four tons. The two spinners were propelled by the PTO but the chain was driven by a small wheel that dropped down on the spreader wheel. Once you set it it would maintain the rate no matter how your speed might vary. The only time that I had a problem was one time there was a light mist in the air. The chain got wet from mist sucked in by the spinners and the rate was very heavy right under the spreader.
