The original muffler on my 1720 was a lot quieter than the Stanley muffler I had to replace it with. The newer muffler has a loud and tin high sound to it, not nearly as good.
Extending the pipe up taller would help on these small tractors, get the noise up and away, but then its pretty easy to lose the whole muffler on a low tree or roof, we tend to use these in cramped places so not easy to do so.
