After you chase your tail for a few weeks with mufflers look at pictures of every tractor made in the last 25 years. You will see that all of them have side panels covering the engines. This is not just for looks, it is because of Federal noise abatement laws. Go look at tractors on a lot. You will see not only covers but also foam rubber and baffles in the engine compartment behind the covers. This is not just tractors it is also trucks. All of this is because the noise is not just from the exhaust just as much is from the block, the head, the pump, etc.
