Rustred has alluded to the fact that the original design was just splash lube. So in that case the additional lube is not needed just helpful. And mostly needed for hours and hours of heavy draft work. You are taking a risk by doing what I assume you are doing and that is putting more power through the drivetrain and not necessarily using it for a use it was designed for. So you have the additional safe guard of the added lubricant or a lighter tractor you can move the weight around on, the choice is yours.
