Yes fire ants are considered a pest because if a human disturbs them they attack with vengeance.
But new research is also starting to prove that one reason the south does not have lyme disease like the north has is because we have fire ants. And while a nuisance to cattle ranchers they are proving beneficial to crop farmers because they are extremely effective in controlling boll weevils in cotton and stinkbugs in soybeans.
