There is not liquid fuel that goes through that valve. The port that points forward goes to the charcoal canister for the evaporative emissions system which more than likely doesn't even work properly. The rear port is simply an atmospheric vent, an extra vent at that. The dual port valve was only used on the 351 & 460, all other engines had that single port valve that you got with the tank.
Anyway you found a grommet to reuse the old valve but the single port valve can be used, you just omit the vent and adapt the line going to the charcoal canister. Many people have been down this road and that's what they have done, the fuel cap is also vented.
