As mentioned, it's the base that can cause problems. Some oil filter bases are concave, some are convex. You could take your old filter and hit a few auto part stores and see which variety of filters have the base that will clear the engine filter base. Also, if you look at the online replacement parts list, they (allegedly) sell an oil filter that is recommended for both the horizontal and vertical 22 HP engine. Not sure how available it is, but it's currently listed for ~$13.
