Saw major damage to a house once. Lightning hit a cherry tree about 75 feet from house, tree exploded, piece about 4x8x8 went over cars parked in the driveway hit the house with siding damage and sheetrock nails popped inside. After the tree it hit the well under the tree, followed wire into house, burned up breakers in panel and went out to telephone ground. All the outlets in the kitchen were burned also. Different time. A young lady was struck and killed in her organic garden. We all saw the lightning, I was about five miles away. Only bolt of lightning even close, all the rest were a long ways off. So don't think you are safe if it not close.
