The squirrel cage fan pull air from evaporator and it also pulls condensation off coils. The condensation is sprayed all over the inside of AC. Add fine dust parts and you have a place for black mold. I use bleach and the dirt disappears. The Conditioner fan gets dirty to. The design caused dirt to get the the fan motor burning and locked up the motor. I took motor apart, spun the rotorit in lathe, used 600g energy cloth and put a mirror finish on shaft. I put AC on its side and used water to clean dirt from conditioner and styrofoam. Bleach turned the styrofoam white. Which makes me think some of what looks like dirt is black mold.
I used white lub and a valve stem umbrella to cover the motor bushing and a flat rubber washer to hold umbrella in place. Anything to keep dirt away from bushing is better than nothing.
There's no easy way to clean a windows
AC. You have to take it apart and sanitize it annually. You are breathing the air that comes in contact with the dirt inside. Don't think the filter will remove all the dirt and dust.
To keep bugs and dust away from condenser I cover unit with aluminum window screen.
If you had to pay someone to do this work you better buy a new one.
