David Browns first tractor the VAK1 first built in 1939 to 1945. David Brown started building the Ferguson type A with Harry Ferguson in 1936 but the tractors were not selling very well and Harry was not being very cooporative. In 1938 David Brown wet to America to see his friend Mr Durant at General Motors to discuss breaking away from Harry Ferguson and designing his own tractor. Mr Durant told that it is certain that there is going to be a war in Europe so you want to make a tractor a lady can drive as the men on the farms may have to go to war. So that,s why the VAK1 tractors had a bench seat, both brake and clutch pedals on the right hand side and a scuttle to keep the ladies legs warm. MJ
