If it still has the stock coil, the wire wires will work. Only with the flame thrower coils are resistor wires required, so I hear. But wire wires will not make it run bad, they are hard on the electronic unit.
Rapid, rhythmic popping back through the intake, worse under load or acceleration is usually caused by an exhaust valve not fully opening, a flat cam. Did you watch the valves opening while the cover was off?
It can also be cross firing, a carbon tracked distributor cap, really bad plug wire insulation between to wires touching each other, usually worse when damp.
