Quite a few years ago my 100-plus-pound Lab-Samoyed-Collie, Jake, got cancer and had to be put down. In his nine years he had always been an indiscriminate, equal-opportunity critter killer -- wouldn't allow anything on my property except my own cats, all of whom he considered part of his pack. Within a very few months I started seeing signs of rats, and soon I was overrun, despite having several outside cats (which I overfed, of course). For Plan A I tried whacking rats with a club, but it was like peeing in the ocean. For Plan B I tried trapping but lost count after trapping at least 30, including one 17-incher. So I moved on to Plan C. I had a heart-to-heart talk with my cats, warning them that they hadn't been doing their job, and if they started now they would risk eating a poisoned rat. The cats, of course, ignored me (with never any ill effects). I put out bait chunks and wiped out all sign of rats in less than two weeks. A few months later a rat or two showed up, apparently from the huge horse-boarding stable across the road, but another quick dose of poison stopped them in less than a week. The whole experience convinced me, sadly, that poison is the only solution when the rat population explodes.

Some purist I'm sure will disagree to no end with what I will tell you but most of us out here in the real world don't really care do we ? Some of them only bring their noses down out of the air long enough to look down them anyway. If you are like me you are only doing this old tractor stuff because you enjoy it. You
