If.. the shift collar is still in place... and you can FULLY engage it... then yes you can use it.
If its hard to engage or disengage,,, it usually means the pto shaft is twisted.. or the collar is twisted, damaged or the input shaft is twisted or damaged.
It your new pto shaft a new or used shaft??
If you can fully engage it so it does not pop out, then yes you can just leave it engaged.
the fact you had trouble pulling the new shaft out(iiuc) tells me something is still twisted on the new shaft or the collar. In my 4 or 5 expierences, is usually the shaft that is twisted.
