You need to take into consideration location plays a big role in crop practice. You live in Alberta,Canada which is an entirely different situation than farming in South Central Ontario., where I live. Another factor is type of farm. If you are a organic farmer you plough, you have to for weed control. Cash crop farmers here in Ontario rarely ever plough, most dont ever own a plough. Plant no till and spray , spray , spray the weeds away. Smaller livestock farms still do some ploughing to incorporate manure, larger farms have mostly gone to liquid manure and it can be sprayed and incorporate with a chisel plough or knifed in requiring no tillage at all. Its as much about time , fuel and labour as it is about soil conservation here. Small farmers have small acres to get across, big time cash crop guys dont have the available time to do tillage. Ploughing will still work just like it always did, but is there any money left ?
