Like Old recommends I was taught at an early age to ALWAYS shut off the gas when finished for the day. Eliminates the possibility of filling the crankcase with gas.
I too have experienced intermittent float sticking. Most often it is a worn float pivot bracket, or a poorly made replacement float. But this also happened to my Minnie Mo U:
Ran it out of fuel once. Just as it quit it suffered a particularly explosive backfire - so violent it actually blew the hose off the carb air inlet.
Afterward the carb would randomly and unpredictably flood. After struggling with it a couple weeks I disassembled the carb. Problem turned out to be partially flattened carb float pontoons. Apparently the explosive pulse through the carburetor was powerful enough to flatten the floats slightly so they would randomly rub and hang up on the (rough) float bowl wall.
