There were still a few privately own telephone companies near me as of a few years ago. The small companies from the past owned the rights to a local geographic area, and sublet to the big national company. Trouble was if I phoned my friend that lived in that area, less than ten miles away, it was a long distance charge phone call. And every call they made outside their little phone companies area was a long distance call for them. Cell phones have finally put a end to this nonsense.
