I did just that with the 54 mower from my 345 this spring. It was not nearly as rusty as yours though. It was hard to scrap or sand in many of the crevices, but I did my best with a wire brush and hand sander. Then Rustoleum oil primer and several coats of JD yellow spray paint. Looks a whole lot better and made me feel better also.
Used the rest of the paint on the hardened chains and drawbar hooks I used to skid firewood logs. Hoping if I lose one in the mud or snow or leaves I would be able to find it with that neon yellow paint.
