That will largely depend on what type of farming you're into. For example, on our dairy farm we could get away with fewer tractors because the planting and harvest times didn't come all at the same time. We would put the oats (a cool weather crop) as early as we could get it in in April. Then, about a month later, we would plant the corn. Then, we'd start haying. Then the oats would be harvested. Then the second or third crop hay and then the corn, first silage and then ear corn. There was a little bit to do all season long. Now, as a grain farmer, I get a relatively narrow window for planting and again for harvesting which requires larger equipment to get it all done in much less time.
