On the 2000 ford f150 and 98 expedition you can buy the chip keys and fobs cheap on ebay and maybe amazing. There is this programming sequence you have to go through and you definitely need a good chip key to do it. As I recall, you switch the ignition on and off a number of times, etc., stick the new key in, or push a button in sequence, etc. to program them. Just have to giggle the vehicle and key replacement to see if it can be done.
On another note something has been running the battery down on both vehicles and I think someone has jimmied the door locks so I have to open the tail gate and crawl in when the battery runs down. Sometimes the passenger door will unlock with a key.
