IH used a rather unique combination nut and ferrule on those fuel lines. It's the only thing that will fit up correctly to the original sediment bowl and carburetor elbow. When it is tightened the first time the ferrule breaks loose form the nut and gets compressed around the line, creating a tight seal.
Just get the right part and all will be well, the inverted flare fittings you have tried are not correct.
Current part number at the CIH dealer is 222-503.
