What you might have is a 340 Industrial or a Utility model with a shuttle shift rather than a torque amplifier. Without pictures this is just a stab in the dark.
This probably isn't something you will be able to adjust away. Most likely there are some bad bearings in the shuttle transmission that will require splitting the tractor and removing it to replace. Bad bearings cause misalignment which then causes the gears to "walk" away form each other, resulting in the "popping out of gear" behavior you describe.
