Some point in time, Autolite VRs used rectifier in their regulators & this made polarity an absolute need to match, but outside of those, polarity is mostly a longevity issue as materials on contacts were different depending on polarity intended for in design....work reversed, but probably shorter life. Current rating has two parts. One being the wiring & contacts to handle the current & the second, the over current function designed to protect the generator from destruction. The latter situation likely occurs seldom in normal operation, but could with battery problems or excessive add-on accessory loads.
