The only type of help JD might have had back then is there some speculation that Cat assisted JD on designing their first diesel tractor the R. There is no concrete evidence of this but fact is the R shared the same bore, stroke and valve dimensions used in the D8 Cat. Plus during the time JD was developing the R, Cat and JD were working together joint marketing their projects and certain other projects so it wouldn't be completely outlandish if Cat did provide a little guidance.
