Openers like that don�t work in the soil around here, wet heavy clay in southern MN.
I believe stuff like that works in dry sand soils?
It does look more like a fertilizer spreader, but I suppose it is a planter.
Are those cast weights on the closing wheels? Interesting.
So my questions....
All planters need to drive the shaft. Looks like a sprocket on the left side of the planter shaft. What actually drives it, a sprocket on the tractor axle, or is there a depth gauge wheel, or what?
Then, all planters need to change speeds for different planting rates. Somewhere needs to be 3 sprockets or gearsets to change speeds, anyhow commonly on planters I ever have seen.
