Hi jm. When a machine shop hones an engine they actually bore it out to the depth of the wear. If you Mic. It would take at least 40 hours to bore a block out to the wear in the top of the cylinder with a hone in A drill. A machine shop can do it in a hour. You should go to a shop and watch it done if you get a chance. They can also put a super smooth finish on the cylinder walls for racers too, but they charge extra for that.
