LOL, good one John ! Sure do remember those. We used to re-sell former power company trucks, they all had these in them, maybe a different brand, the case was not silver, more like OD Green or something. We had them in our trucks as well.
These fall along the lines of smudge pot road flares, road sign reflectors with the marble like things, and many others. Don't believe I've seen a smudge pot in use since the 80's.
