I had every endorsement until my dad got rid of his school bus so I let the P drop off.
My company requires I have doubles; haz mat; and tanker for my job. I use them daily as I pull doubles.
The tanker endorsement is a piece a cake. Take the test one time and pass and you are good as long as you keep it current. Use to be you only needed a tanker endorsement if you had a single tank 1000 gallons or more. Not so any more. Now you need a tanker endorsement if you have 1000 gallons in bulk containers. IE: 119 gallons or more. Hauling 5 - 250 gallon totes now requires a tank endorsement.
The Haz Mat is a different story. You need to go a couple of months before you go get the license to a 3rd party fingerprint site. They use your fingerprints to do a federal background check on you. Just like getting a TWIC card. Once the background check is done they will notify you so you can go to the DMV and get the license. You have to take the Haz Mat test every time you renew your license. It is the only test you have to take at every renew. This finger printing and background check adds about $80 to the cost of your license if I remember correctly. The back ground check is good for 5 years. So if your state gives out 6 year license your license will expire in 5 years on the date your background check expires.
It does not effect your physical or put you under any other scrutiny other than the background check. The only thing the Haz Mat does for you if you do not need it now is allows you to find a job tomorrow. Just about every licensed Haz Mat hauling company is looking for drivers because no one wants to jump threw all the hoops.
