When I was in the Marine Corps I had a nuclear materials endorsement on my government license To get that, they give you a book about an inch thick and basically tell you to memorize it.
I didn't need it myself, but I had collateral duties as Motor Transport NCO and I was responsible for getting the proper licenses and endorsements for those who did need it. I figured if I went through it myself I'd be better prepared to help the guys that needed it.
