Both types of gauges are functional. both can tell the operator an overlapping array of electrical data. If a person has grown up into the electron world, both are probably not needed as the overlapping info covers what the operator needs to know, or can use as a reason to check things out. But this solution shown in the link, or one like it, can provide both. the amp part of the system needs to be able to handle 20% more than the system can deliver, and the amp shunt needs to be fused at 90% of the rated amps. This protects the system, and protects the gauge. Make sure of the waterproofness of your purchase, or make a W/P case for it. Jim
