My Grandpa worked in the Racine, WI Case tractor factory in the late teens and early 1920's. He was a teenager when he started, worked with a guy 40 or so, and had to read the newspaper to him at lunch break. The guy could read, but could no longer see from years of soldering radiator parts together without shielding. He discouraged Grandpa from following in his example.
At one point, Grandpa's job was to take the tractors outside to a huge sand pile, set it running and trying to climb, then let it go on its own, spinning the rear wheels clean enough for painting. At least, that's the story he stuck to.
