It sounds like he has an 800 series tractor of some sort, that might be better in the Ford section, not the N section......
And welcome to the forum tot he original poster, we love to help out but it�s all long distance, sight unseen, so we need the info, lots of info, and once you post 10 or so messages they assume you are a real,person and then allow you to post pictures, so hope to see more info on this issue here or in the Ford forum.
