On the 10th of February, 1980, my dad took out a load of manure. Crossing the railroad tracks with the 5020, he was struck by a train. To this day, he doesn't know how he missed the train, but it was only 3 engines and a caboose travelling fast, so he guesses he looked past the train.

The tractor broke in two between the engine and cab... he went out either the front or side window. Two were broke, and he has no recollection of which. He landed in a snow bank, and suffered a separated shoulder. He walked home after the accident, and met the ambulance crew by the mailbox.

He was lucky... one rear tire broke loose from the cast center. His glasses were found under the tire.

The 5020 was a total loss. It had about 10,000 hours already at that point, and had been just overhauled by the Deere dealer. the engine had maybe 20 hours on at most. The tractor was sold for salvage; the spreader (a Deere 680) sat by the tracks or years as a reminder.

That 5020 ran an 8 bottom plow, 12 foot 100 chisel plow, a couple of Fox choppers, etc. Dad really missed it. A 4840 replaced it.

I was in first grade at the time.

Years later, we bought a nearly identical 5020 at a consignment sale in IL. We were looking for a cheap tractor, and nostalgia took over. It had originally been in Ontario. It wasn't nearly the same... it was here until about 5 years ago. I don't miss it- it was fun to run for a bit, but parts were expensive IF available, and it was loud and nobody's favorite. After a soundgard and a turbo, it's hard to go back!

But that 5020 video by Deere took me back to childhood and watching dad with the big plow. That thing was king of the neighborhood in it's day.
