They are saving money.
By not doing any sorting at the local post office, they eliminate at least one position. Money saved.
By letting robots do the sorting at a central office, they eliminate several positions. Money saved.
It's not like they're sending an extra truck to transport that letter from the local branch to the central office. There is very little local mail. Most of it is bulk mail coming in, not letters going across town. That truck is running back and forth anyway. A few letters is not going to increase its fuel consumption appreciably.
