pretty big subject. when things are new and flat nothing is used. check with manufacturer, many gaskets have the sealant built in them. yes many spray them with copper coat. i use permatex high tack sealer on them along with all the rest of gaskets. easily removeable and holds gaskets in place. gas and oil resistant also. been using it for over 40 years. did not have a reason to try copper coat. and what engine are you referring to. on the GM 350's it was a metal gasket and i used nothing. and as for silicone throw that in the garbage can. but yes GM used it on valve covers and thats it years ago.it is actually a gasket maker . blue is for high heat. also on the old tractors from the 1920's and 30's they just smeared grease on the head gasket and reused them and so did i.
