Inspection good for 12 months. Registration expires Dec 31 and is prorated for every month you don't have it registered. I leave my boat in storage until May or June each year and then register it and pay a bit more than half the yearly cost.
For a renewal, you should be able to do it on-line and print off the temporary and use that until the real registration comes in the mail. But sounds like yours is a first time, and that probably has to be done in person.
