Angus has managed to create a brand image, and selling a brand is important in marketing. If you feed and finish a pen of cattle, say a Hereford, an Angus, a Limousine and a Charolais all the same age, and basic condition, you will most likely find that they don�t achieve the desired finish at the same amount of days in feed, even though they all ate together at the same trough. The Hereford and Angus are smaller breeds, and will reach the finish at a lower carcass weight, and fewer days on feed. The Limousine and Charolais will both finish well, the meat will be of the same quality, but it will require more days on feed, and you will get a larger finished carcass. The packers are looking for an animal that weighs no more than 1200lb finish weight. Not a 15-1800 lb finished steer. Rate of saying gain, feed vs lb of gain is key.
