First off its not algae. We just call it algae because of the way it looks. It is actually a living microscopic bug and its residue. So to kill it you need a pesticide. The bottle must say Biocide for it to work on diesel algae. The bug lives in the water in your fuel. This is why it is essential you keep diesel fuel and any containers very clean.
I use and recommend Biobor JF as a preventative since I live in a very humid area where condensation is likely. For a small tractor tank where we are talking 10 or 15 gallons of fuel I recommend draining and throwing the fuel away if you find you have diesel algae. The fuel is cheaper than the filters you will go threw trying to filter out the bug once you kill them. Start with fresh clean fuel and shock treat it with biocide to kill any bugs clinging to the tank interior.
