Anything you change or adjust in the distributor has some effect on timing and dwell. BUT, the effect of points gap on timing is slight. Standard procedure for engine tune up was to replace points and condenser, set dwell with a dwell meter, and then reset timing to correct spec. Some things that you do NOT do are trying to set timing by adjusting points or setting timing before setting dwell.
Another thing to pay attention to is lubricating the distributor cam and the rubbing block on the points. A small dab of white lithium grease is recommended. Failure to lubricate this critical wear point usually results in the points gap closing up as you run the engine. When the gap gets too small, the engine stops - wherever you are and no matter the time. Murphy's law usually dictates that this will occur at your farthest point from tools or assistance.

After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point
