There was one year that we were picking swaths but got down to our last 2 fields that were still standing. Grandpa and dad didn't want to take the time and waste half a day converting the header from pickup to straight cut mode (didn't have separate pickup headers at the time). So even though the grain was dead ripe standing we just swathed it anyway with the combine going in right behind it. That is what your picture and description reminds me of.
