New knees might not be the answer unless you can get full knee rotation back after the therapy is done. A stiff old body with a grouchy back compounds the issue. I use a long shoe horn all the time, in fact several times a day. I take my shoes off every time I come in the house so the shoe horn stays polished.
I am blessed with the highest arches my podiatrist has ever seen so slip on shoes and boots do not work well for me. Only lace shoes that I can spread open good and far will do. Pulling socks on is a real morning challenge too when the arthritic fingers are screaming at me. It helps to use a pliers to grab the back of the shoe to pull it on but that is not the best for the shoe. But it could be worse.
