39 through 41 H's & M's had the starter push-button behind the steering post on the fuel tank support if they came with a factory installed starter. The "rod/bar" apperatus to the left of the brake lock mechanism is the starter "step-on" bar. This tractor has all the "aftermarket" convenience goodies that were made for H's & M's built in the '39-41 era. Later models, after 41, I think, IH put the starter button up on the steerting post, but I don't think I-H ever did a brake lock latch rod. Lots of owners of early H's & M's that had the factory starter button on the gas tank support simply drilled a hole through the steering wheel support pipe at an angle & put a 3/8 bolt through the hole so the thread end rested on the starter button. Whalla, hand starting, much easier than to try to push it with your foot!
