The way to know is to put a volt meter across the battery.
Be sure it is charging and the engine is revved up to charging speed.
The voltage should be up around 14-15 volts. If it is higher, yes something is wrong.
But possibly if it has been idled around and not brought up to enough RPM to excite the charging, the battery may be partially discharged, and it called for high amperage to bring it up. To find the state of charge, check the voltage before starting. It needs to be up around 12.8v. If down around 11.5, it is discharged and should be charged before starting. It's not good for an alternator to try to recharge a discharged battery.
If the alternator is hesitant to excite even at high RPM, a smaller pulley will help spin it faster.
