Check the distributor shaft for side play. If it is not tight the points will not stay set, it can do strange things.
Could be a failing or wrong coil. Many times the wrong coil/resistor combo gets installed, especially if it's been converted to 12v. After running a while, feel the coil. If it is substantially hotter than the surrounding parts, it is over heating.
And be sure the gas cap is vented. Even if it says vented, try loosening it when it fails. Could be the vent is clogged or never got drilled.
