Last year as I was returning home from a trip the A/C compressor on my 09 F-150 began to tick and got quite loud by time I go it home. I took it to the local A/C shop and they did a couple of tests on it and told me the compressor was self destructing and that he had had several just like that lately. It wound up needing a compressor, the metering valve, dryer and the condenser had shrapnel in it that would not come out even when he flushed it a several times it was still yielding shrapnel, so it wound up needing the condense also. All told it was about a $1,200.00 event but it cools fine now in the triple digit heat index weather we have had this week here in Ga.
