There are several possible issues (not in any order) The addition of heat is usually evidenced by slowing, not speeding up. The battery could be going bad in one cell, and being forced by the other cells to perform when challenged by starter draw (seen it many times) The cable wiring could be going bad and partial rewelding of strands allows more current. The engine could be making some power and as it begins to start, the starter speeds up from less load on it. As the engine turns, its lube gets motivated to be a bit more slippery.
We need a lot more info. Who told you the starter was going bad, and why did they indicate that. We need to know the history of the issue, and when/if it seems to not do it. We need to know the battery history. It would be real nice to have an amp reading from the moment of starter engagement to the moment the key is released from the start position. Jim
