Hi jclark welcome to YT! NCWayne has not posted on Yesterday�s Tractors since November 2019. As the other two have replied it sounds to me like you have a possible cause for the oil consumption you are experiencing. If piston rings break they generally wear the piston ring grooves wide and score the cylinder wall, indeed leading to heavy oil use. The engine in the original post did not seam to have an obvious cause for the oil use it was seeing. It had also been torn apart several times to check for anything that may have been missed. I aagree find another mechanical service provider to do your engine work. It seems like the one that worked on your engine does not provide to quality work.
