Safety switches became common around 1982. Some people remove them or cobble some wire around them, but they might keep you and your kids or grandkids from serious injury if they are in place.
The switch that kills the engine when you put the transmission in gear is a neutral safety switch. It will be near the shifter. There will be another one in or under the seat that kills the engine if you turn the PTO on and are not in the seat.
