I had that in my MF-135 accompanied by reduced power. When I lifted off the rocker cover, I found the adjuster on one rocker arm had loosened and the rocker arm was no longer opening that valve. Also that the rotator cap was off the valve stem. Properly adjusting the valve clearance improved power significantly. There could be a sticky cam follower. The Z-145 seems to have a problem in continuing to oil the rocker arm shaft. It uses corks to hold oil in the shaft. They rot with decades. Eventually the pin that's supposed to prevent the rocker arm shaft from rotating breaks and the shaft turns in the towers cutting off the last of the oil.

I'm in the process of building new rocker arms. They are virtually impossible to find new or used. All that show up in the salvage yards are worn out. I've made a new rocker arm shaft that uses steel plugs in the ends and a larger rotation lock pin, plus a groove in the oiling tower area so loss of pin won't stop oil getting to the shaft interior. I use snap rings instead of tiny cotter keys to hold the end rocker arms in place. I don't know if this will become a commercial product or not. This prototype has been more expensive than I wished. And took 9 months to get ground to diameter. I might finish the rocker arm bushings this week. Have to cut oil grooves and ream them to size. Several shrunk below specified clearances. Its not possible to buy the original garlock bushings, so I've gone with solid bearing bronze.

Today's Featured Article - Third Brush Generators - by Chris Pratt. While I love straightening sheet metal, cleaning, and painting old tractors, I use every excuse to avoid working on the on the electrics. I find the whole process sheer mystery. I have picked up and attempted to read every auto and farm electrics book with no improvement in the situation. They all seem to start with a chapter entitled "Theory of Electricity". After a few paragraphs I usually close the book and go back to banging out dents. A good friend and I were recently discussing our tractor electrical systems when he stated "I figure it all comes back to applying Ohms Law". At this point ... [Read Article]
