The NMFC number is only a starting point anymore. I can tell you the number will come up class 85 without even looking it up.
But we use lbs per cu ft now. We have a machine on the dock that weighs the pallet and measures the cu ft in a matter of seconds. From this we get the lbs per cu ft and the computer calculates the class. The computer will even calculate the lowest overall rate.
Say the piece weighs 490 lbs. 0 to 500 lbs class 85 is XX per lb. And 500 to 2000 lbs is YY per lb. The computer will automatically figure the rate at 490 lbs at XX and 500 lbs at YY and pick the cheapest price. The bill will then read deficit weight added to rate at 500 lbs.
