I made such a boom with chains hanging down. Don t know if it works or not but I have never hit an animal nor seen any get chased away by it. I have run over some pheasant and partridge nests though and the chains won t help avoiding that. Most common around here is either letting the dog out in the field before cutting or putting up some "scarecrows" the night before cutting. These "scarecrows" can be just some seed bags on hay forks or some polystyrene foam crates dangling in the wind. They are known to be very efficient. Mama deer will move her fawns away from these strange things during the night.
